One does not need to be a rocket scientist to understand the formula for weight loss. Eat less / exercise more. SIMPLE. But getting over compulsive overeating, and keeping the weight off permanently, obviously requires more.
Diets don’t work. They are just words on a page telling people what and when to eat. But they don’t resolve the emotional causes of overeating . So what exactly is it, that is required for success?
Some experts say an inner journey of deep soul searching ( years of psychotherapy to revisit childhood perhaps) to find out WHY. They believe that long term weight loss won’t be possible until one has identified the causes.
As a last resort many join Overeater’s Anonymous who highly advise members follow the 12 step AA recovery program while also recognizing the psychological reasons for their overeating. I found an enormous amount of support in O.A, loved their one day at a time concept, but my success was short lived. I rejected their theory that overeating is an illness, and that I was “powerless” over food.
